New York: Heroic Long Island crossing guard fatally struck by a truck while saving kids
A heroic crossing guard was fatally struck by a truck in Hempstead Village moments after saving the lives of several children while on duty Friday morning, officials said. Virginia Carol Leviner, 66, was holding up her stop sign and escorting three children across the street at the intersection of South Franklin Street and Grove Street around 7:30 a.m at the time, officials said.
She saw a truck driving toward them and pushed the children out of the way when she realized the truck wasn't going to stop. None of the children were injured. Leviner, a mother of three and grandmother of seven, was fatally struck and pinned under the truck, officials and family said. She had been working as a crossing guard for 35 years. She had spent 28 years working at that intersection. The driver remained at the scene. No arrests have been made.
