Kansas: Johnson County deputy killed after being struck by vehicle during traffic stop
A Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff's Deputy was struck and killed by a vehicle while conducting a traffic stop on 69 Highway near 143rd Street early Sunday morning. The sheriff's office said Master Deputy Brandon Collins was killed at 1:30 a.m. when his vehicle was struck by another motorist during a traffic stop. The name of the driver who struck Collins has not been released.
"He was survived by his wife and two daughters. He was a deputy for over 20 years with the Johnson County Sheriff's Office and he will be greatly missed," said Officer Jackie Zickel, of the Overland Park Police Department, which is investigating the crash.
Police said the northbound car that struck Collins' cruiser didn't pull over to make room.
U.S. Highway 69 was closed in both directions as detectives from the Overland Park Police Department conduct an investigation into the incident.
"It's a risk that we know is always there. Obviously when there's a neighboring agency that we work with all the time, we're all very sad. We all mourn together," said Zickel.
Rep. Kevin Yoder issued a statement about Collins' death. "It's a devastating reminder, especially today on the fifteenth anniversary of the attacks on September 11th, that our first responders risk their lives all the time to protect us and keep us safe," he said. "We owe them a debt of gratitude we will never be able to repay."
