New Jersey: State Trooper Dies From Rt. 295 'Struck-By' Injuries
A trooper struck by a vehicle while responding to a car fire Monday night has died of his injuries, New Jersey State Police confirmed this morning. Trooper Sean Cullen, 31, was struck around 8:15 p.m. as he was walking on the shoulder on Interstate 295 southbound near milepost 23.4 at the scene of a car fire.
He was airlifted to Cooper University Hospital with head injuries and died around 12:30 this morning, police said in an announcement. The 22-year-old driver who struck him stopped immediately and is cooperating with police, police said. No charges had been filed as of Tuesday morning.
The driver and another woman were taken to a hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries, according to 6ABC. No information on their conditions has been released.
Several police and fire vehicles were already at the fire scene with emergency lights activated when Cullen was struck, police noted in their announcement. Members of Cullen's family, several troopers and members of other law enforcement agencies held vigil late into the evening at the hospital, police said.
Cullen was a member of the 154th State Police Class and was stationed at the Bellmawr Station. He had been a trooper for about two years.
