Florida: Tow truck driver killed trying to help motorist
A Tampa tow truck driver was killed on the Howard Frankland Bridge road while trying to help a stranded driver and passenger he spotted early Monday morning after finishing up another call. The Florida Highway Patrol says the driver who hit 42-year-old Rogelio "Roger" Perez-Borroto didn't bother to stop to call for help.
Borroto was working for Lou's Total Car Care in Tampa. His boss Luiz Moralez says, "Roger. He's a part of our family -- a part of our business you know. He's not employee number 1155 - it's Roger. This is a man, you know, who wouldn't come to work 15 minutes early! He'd come a couple of hours early to see if anybody needs help."
Borroto, a father, was hit and killed ab out 2:20 a.m. after he put a driver and their passenger in the cab of his truck. That's when troopers say 36-year-old Allison Faye Huffman slammed into him.
Moralez adds, "Being the kindhearted individual he is -- it cost him his life."
Troopers later found Huffman's damaged Volkswagen Passat in the parking lot of the Crown Plaza Hotel near Westshore Mall. Investigators say she was later spotted in a cab outside the Hard Rock Casino off Interstate 4.
Huffman is no stranger to the law she's been arrested for DUI three times in the past.
If you have any information her whereabouts or the crash, please call the FHP at 813-631-4020.
Moralez blames the legal system. He says, "Roger is no longer with us. You guys are the ones who allowed him to die because with her record she should have been put away a long time ago."
Borroto was from Cuba and has lived in the United States for 20 years. He leaves behind a young daughter.
His older brother George, a truck driver, says his brother loved to go fishing. "I know the risk but people don't respect the law in this country. The law should be tougher. We have a lot of stress and responsibility in this world. I think he's in a better place."
Ironically, today kicks off the Florida Highway Patrol's week-long “Hit and Run, Bad to Worse” awareness campaign to educate drivers of their responsibilities if involved in a crash and the consequences of leaving the scene. In 2015, there were over 92,000 hit and run traffic crashes in the State of Florida resulting in over 19,000 injuries and 186 fatalities
