New Jersey State Forest Fire Member Struck and Killed

A firefighter from Raritan Township was struck by a vehicle and killed near a state park in Clinton Township today. Jeffrey Scheurer, 35, was conducting a controlled burn along with other firefighters when he was struck on Route 629 about 11:30 a.m., near the Round Valley Reservoir, according to the Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office. Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony Kearns said heavy smoke from the burn may have played a part in the crash, as a shift in the wind led to reduced visibility.
