TEXAS DEPUTY CONSTABLE DIES AFTER BEING HIT BY ONCOMING S.U.V. ON TOLLWAY

A deputy constable was killed in the line of duty Monday. He was writing a traffic ticket, doing his job, when a vehicle hit him. Jason Norling, 38, had been with the Harris County Precinct 5 constable's office for eight years. He was no stranger to patrolling the Westpark Tollway. On Monday, he was simply doing his job when he was hit and later died.

It began, authorities say, as a routine stop at around 10:15am. But within hours, Deputy Constable Jason Norling would be dead. "It doesn't sink it," said Precinct 5 Constable Phil Camus. "That numbness goes away, but the sadness will be with us for a long time."

According to Constable Camus, Norling stopped a driver on the eastbound lanes of the tollway around Gessner. The deputy, he said, parked his motorcycle behind the driver's car on the shoulder with his lights on. Minutes later, another driver heading eastbound struck the officer's motorcycle.

"The right front end of the violator's car struck he parked violator's car, striking the deputy and the deputy flew through the air, I'm told, like 90 feet," said Constable Camus. Deputy Norling was rushed to Memorial Hermann Hospital. A caravan of fellow officers escorted the ambulance, but nothing could be done to save the deputy's life.

"I'm told that they did take him to surgery, they did perform some type of surgery," said Constable Camus. Norling, who had been with Precinct 5, for the last eight years, was assigned to the tollway. He had ridden a motorcycle for the last five years.

He leaves behind a brother, who also works for the department, as well as a grieving wife. This all happened in broad daylight and in clear conditions. So it's unclear why the driver allegedly hit the deputy. There's no word at this time of any charges.
