Ohio: OSP steps up patrol for holiday travel

Police and emergency crews are speaking out about safety after a deputy was struck Saturday night. The Hamilton County Sheriff's said that Deputy Herman Oyler was struck while investigating a traffic crash.

Ohio State Highway Patrol have stepped up their presence on the roadways as millions all across the country prepare to travel for Thanksgiving.

"When I heard that information, it's just saddening. It really is, I hate to hear that anyone gets hurt while doing their jobs, especially while trying to make things safer for the public,” said Sergeant Robert Burd.

The move over law, which applies to every stationary vehicle with flashing lights, was expanded in December of 2013 to include road construction, maintenance and utility crews.

"If you can't move over, please slow down when driving by and give us some room," he said. "That's what we're asking for but if you have the ability to move over please take advantage of that."

According to ODOT, the law requires all drivers to move over one lane passing by any vehicle with flashing or rotating lights parked on the roadside.

"It's just courtesy if someone is broke down," he continued. "It is courtesy to get over and give them some room. They could have their family in the vehicle, just trying to change a tire to get off the roadway."
