MOVE OVER LAW BEGINS IN DELAWARE

A new law meant to help protect emergency workers in Delaware takes effect on January 1. It's called the "Move Over" law, and it requires drivers to give extra space to emergency vehicles that are stopped on the side of the road with lights flashing. Drivers will have to move a lane away from the emergency vehicle or slow down significantly when they can't change lanes safely. The law covers all roads with two or more lanes in the same direction. Office of Highway Safety director Tricia Roberts says dozens of law enforcement officers in Delaware have been injured or killed by passing motorists. State law enforcement officials pushed for the law during the last General Assembly session.
