Montana: Good Samaritan dies after being hit by two vehicles in Mineral County
The Montana Highway Patrol is investigating a crash involving five vehicles that resulted in one death and two serious injuries. The crash happened early Tuesday morning near mile marker 5 on Interstate 90 near Saltese in Mineral County.
Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Charles Burton tells MTN News that a downed tree blocking the road was responsible for all five crashes. The first two vehicles hit the tree with no injuries resulting. The third vehicle hit a tree, and then the driver of that vehicle tried to put out safety cones to alert other drivers.
That person was then struck by a vehicle, and then hit again by the fifth vehicle involved.
The victim was taken to St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula before dying.
Three other people were also taken to the hospital; the nature and severity of their injuries has not been disclosed.
The name of the victim has not yet been released.
Trooper Burton says they do not yet know if speed or alcohol were factors, but says weather likely was.
The MHP is continuing to investigate the crash.
