FLORIDA OFFICER HIT BY CAR WHILE ESCORTING MIAMI OFFICER'S BODY

A Miami police officer who was escorting the body of another officer found fatally shot was struck by a Mercedes Benz on Interstate 95 on Tuesday.

The officer was traveling southbound on his motorcycle with the rest of the motorcade when he was struck near 125th Street. The driver of the car remained at the scene.

Some officers in the motorcade returned to assist the officer, who was lying in the middle of the interstate. Several paramedics helped him onto a stretcher, and he was then taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Miami police Lt. Bill Schwartz said the officer is responsive and talking.

"I guess this just isn't our day," Schwartz said.

Detective James Walker was found shot to death in an unmarked car in an alleyway in North Miami Beach. Police established a mobile command center at the crime scene and were transferring his body to the Medical Examiner's Office when the officer on the motorcycle was injured. The officer suffered leg injuries and was being X-rayed to determine if his legs were broken.
