ResponderSafety.Com Debuts Roadway Safety Teaching Topic Packages for Instructors

Instructors are the backbone of the education and training of the emergency services. ResponderSafety.com and the Responder Safety Learning Network recognize that instructors must be properly prepared and equipped to teach roadway safety both as a topic in its own right and integrated with other tasks like vehicle fire suppression or rendering aid to motorists who have broken down. To assist instructors with teaching recommended practices in roadway safety, the Responder Safety Learning Network has developed ten Roadway Safety Teaching Topic Packages on key practices to keep responders safe when working on the roadway. Each package includes:

  • a lesson plan with a pre-class assignment, materials, learning objectives, teaching content, practical and tabletop exercises, resources, and case studies
  • a "TIM in a Minute" video summarizing major concepts in the lesson
  • a PowerPoint presentation for teaching key content from the lesson
  • model SOPs appropriate to the lesson plan

Roadway Safety Teaching Topic Packages are now available for:

  1. Setting Up a Traffic Incident Management Area
  2. PPE & Emergency Lighting
  3. Advance Warning
  4. Blocking
  5. Move It or Work It
  6. Scene Control
  7. Manual Traffic Control
  8. Termination
  9. Vehicle Fires
  10. TIM for the Next Generation

The Packages are downloadable free of charge on ResponderSafety.com. Instructors can customize the lesson plans, presentations, and model SOPs to the department's or class' needs. All content follows recommended policies and practices and is consistent with the National TIM Training from the Federal Highway Administration and the training available on the Responder Safety Learning Network.

"We are very excited to get these Roadway Safety Teaching Topic Packages out into the field," said Jack Sullivan, Director of Training for the Emergency Responder Safety Institute. "It's very important for instructors to be supported with content and materials when we ask them to go out and teach roadway safety and traffic incident management. They have to be confident that they are teaching recommended practices in a standardized, vetted way. These Packages are going to go a long way toward equipping them with what they need to integrate roadway safety into all the response protocols they teach."

ResponderSafety.com encourages all instructors to review and try these Roadway Safety Teaching Topic Packages and then give us your feedback using our Support form. We want to hear your comments so we can improve how we support instructors doing the hard work every day teaching our responders how to work safely on the roadway.
