Ohio: Driver charged with Highway Patrol trooper’s death

Police have charged a man with the death of a Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper. Joshua Gaspar, 37, of Columbia Station, is charged with aggravated vehicular homicide.

Police say Gaspar was driving the vehicle that struck Trooper Kenneth Velez, who was making a traffic stop on Interstate 90 in Lakewood. Thursday, Velez was standing on the berm when he was struck by Gaspar, who swerved to avoid another vehicle, according to Highway Patrol.

“This is a tragedy for the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Department of Public Safety,” said Col. Paul Pride, Ohio State Highway Patrol superintendent. “Our prayers go out to the Velez family during this difficult time.” Velez, 48, graduated as a member of the 118th Academy class in November 1989.
