E.M.T. DIES AFTER BEING STRUCK AT EMERGENCY SCENE IN MICHIGAN
Saturday, January 26, 2008

At approximately 6:10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, a Jackson Community Ambulance emergency medical technician was killed after being struck by a vehicle in Sylvan Township. Cheryl Kiefer, 23, of Brooklyn was pronounced dead at approximately 8:45 a.m. Jan. 26 at the University of Michigan Hospital.

The crew was in an ambulance returning to Jackson County and observed an accident on eastbound I-94 at Kalmbach Road in Sylvan Township. According to Joyce Williams of Huron Valley Ambulance, the crew turned around and were assisting the accident victim when another car lost control and struck one of the EMTs. The critically injured EMT was trapped in the wreckage until extricated by Chelsea Area Fire Authority.

JCA and HVA paramedics transported the injured medic to the Trauma Center at the University of Michigan Hospital. No one else was transported from either accident at the scene, Williams said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to our EMT and the family at this tragic time," Williams said.

Jackson Community Ambulance is a partnership between Huron Valley Ambulance in Ann Arbor and Foote Health System in Jackson.
